Early Life and Education

Born into a family with a rich political legacy, Kalanithi is the son of Murasoli Maran, a former Union Minister of India, and the grand-nephew of M. Karunanidhi, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He completed his schooling at Don Bosco, Chennai, and pursued a degree in Commerce from Loyola College, Chennai. Furthering his education, he obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, USA

In 1993, recognizing the untapped potential in the regional television market, Kalanithi launched Sun TV, a Tamil-language satellite television channel. This initiative marked the inception of the Sun Group. Sun TV's diverse programming, tailored to the preferences of Tamil-speaking audiences, quickly garnered a substantial viewership, establishing the channel as a household name in Tamil Nadu. 


Expansion and Diversification

  • Television Broadcasting: The network expanded to operate 33 channels, reaching over 140 million households in India and catering to the South Indian diaspora in 27 countries.

  • Print Media: The acquisition of publications like the Tamil daily newspaper Dinakaran strengthened the group's presence in print media.

  • Radio: The launch of FM radio stations under the brand Suryan FM further diversified the group's media portfolio.​

  • Direct-to-Home (DTH) Services: Sun Direct, the group's DTH service, provided satellite television services across India, enhancing accessibility to their content.

  • Aviation: In 2010, Kalanithi acquired a significant stake in the Indian airline SpiceJet, demonstrating his interest in diversifying beyond media.

  • Sports: The group owns the Sunrisers Hyderabad cricket team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in South Africa's T20 League, marking its foray into sports management.

Kalanithi is married to Kavery Maran, and they have a daughter, Kavya Maran. Kavery has been an integral part of the Sun Group, and Kavya has taken on leadership roles within the organization, including overseeing the IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad
